Local Schools
The Fentress County School System is under the direction of the elected ten member Board of Education. With four elementary schools and one high school in the system, three of the four elementary schools have been constructed in the last ten years. The schools have a student population of about 2400. Clarkrange High School has won several awards, including National Title for their Chess Program. The girls basketball team has won five State Championships. The Tennessee Department of Education funds and operates York Agricultural Institute. This school was constructed to honor WWI's greatest hero, Sgt. Alvin C. York. The enrollment is around 700 students. In 1986, the school was selected as Tennessee's Center for Rural Education. In 1989, it was one of the 218 schools in the nation to receive the National School of Excellence Award. Again in 1992 York Institute was recognized nationally among 140 public secondary schools selected as being one of "America's Best Schools" by Redbook magazine. Their achievements also include winning a girls' State Basketball Championship. One of York's most well-known alumni include Astronaunt Roger Crouch. Faith Baptist Academy and Cumberland Christian School are private schools enrolling grades K-8 and K-12, respectively. Pre-K programs are available at the Early Learning Center at Faith Baptist, York Elementary, Pine Haven Elementary, Allardt Elementary, and South Fentress Elementary. Post secondary classes are now available in Jamestown through Roane State Community College. The State of Tennessee operates the Adult Education Program at Pine Haven Community Center and offers non-traditional students an opportunity to gain their high school diploma or GED.
