What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader is a software program that helps teachers motivate, monitor, and manage student reading practice.

The AR program involves three steps:

  1. The student selects a book from York Elementary's AR quiz list. The public library also has a copy of this list.
  2. The student reads the book.
  3. The student takes a computerized Reading Practice quiz upon comletion of the book.

What is Reading Renaissance?

Reading Renaissance is a set of teaching techniques used in the classroom combined with Accelerated Reader:

  • Each classroom (grades 2-8) devotes a minimum of 30 minutes daily to silent reading practice.
  • Each student reads at an appropriate individualized reading level (determined by the taking the STAR Reading test).
  • Information is received from the AR software so that students can be monitored and guided in their reading practice.

What is the STAR Reading test?

STAR Reading is a norm-referenced, computer-adaptive reading test and database. It is given to accurately assess the reading levels of our students.
